Embracing Nature

In the late 19th Century, architect Antoni Gaudi was deeply influenced by the atmosphere of forests for the interior of his masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain.

Gaudi’s stunning buildings in Barcelona, Spain, remain a legacy to his life-long belief that we need look no further than nature to see construction at its supreme. The most ambitious of his works is the Sagrada Familia cathedral. Gaudi took over design in 1883 and the building is due to be finished in 2026, 100 years after his death.

The cathedral’s awesome interior is inspired by the idea of a forest that invites prayer. Tree-like columns branch off near the roof for support, and in-between skylights contain green and gold glass to reflect light. Enhancing the feeling of standing on a forest floor and Gaudi’s plan to create a contemplative atmosphere are large colored glass windows letting in dappled sunlight.

A century or so later, Currey & Company is even incorporating living matter into its designs. They are embracing the unity of opposites with functional pieces inspired by organic forms found in nature.

Sacred gingko leaves, serene lily pads and blooming calla lilies are just a few of the natural shapes their lighting, furniture and accent pieces have been designed to emulate. Crafted from metal, wood and ceramic, these designs never wilt but stand the test of time.

Gin Kyo Chandelier & Bohlend Cabinet

Currey & Company 9000-0133 – Ten ginko leaves created for Currey by a master sculptor adorn the ring of the Gin Kyo Chandelier. The piece’s 10 lights come to life behind these natural accents and gleam off of its Dark Contemporary Gold Leaf finish.

Currey & Company 3000-0021 – A true work of art with many functions, the Bohlend Cabinet not only features an interior storage drawer with felt liner, teak veneer surfaces and adjustable tempered glass shelves, but an antiqued mirror back panel and an LED touch light with three-way setting. Its eye-catching design of hand-cut ginko leaf marquetry is made of mappa veneer and is perfectly contrasted by the solid teak construction and solid brass hardware.

Currey & Company 6000-0067 – Calla Lily Table Lamp

Pretty as a picture! Intricate hand-formed ceramic flower petals create a feminine lamp chic enough to handle any style room from vintage to modern. The fantastic texture of the crafted flower base contrasts with the soft silk shade in eggshell and the Antique Brushed Brass hardware gives it a warm finishing touch.

Two For Tuesday

Uttermost lamps are hand finished. They take great pride in the depth and character of their finishes. Each finish is a multi-step process that typically includes hand leafing in gold or silver, and many layers of glazes and stains. All finishes are applied by hand.

Orienta Table Lamp, Set/2 ($237.60)

Uttermost lamp bases are typically constructed of wrought iron, porcelain, glass, leather, metal, hammered steel, cast aluminum, cast brass, or cast resin. The iron and steel is hand forged, while the cast materials are molded from an original hand carved original. Leathers are hand sewn and applied individually. The glass and porcelain are handcrafted, fired and time-cured in a furnace. The resin material is a very dense material that has the weight of hardwood, yet is much more durable.

Aside from the lower cost, purchasing a set/2 lamps has other benefits. For instance, you can be assured they both come from the same production lot and will have an identical color and finish. Customers sometimes purchase a lamp on spec to see if they will like it and order a second lamp a month later only to find that there may be slight variations in dimensions, color and finish from lot to lot. Purchasing a boxed set of two assures both lamps will be identical in dimensions, color and finish.

Murray Feiss to Exit Lamp Category

After much consideration, Murray Feiss has made the decision to exit the portable lamp category (i.e. table lamps, floor lamps and torchieres).

Prices on all products in Feiss’ Lamp Catalog are being reduced substantially on existing inventory. The new closeout pricing went into effect on Monday, January 13th and can now be found on the Murray Feiss Clearance Sale Page. All table lamps, floor lamps and torchieres are now 50% off MSRP while supplies last. Mirrors will not be affected and will remain in the core Feiss product line.

PORT 68 Launches Licensed Collection with Scalamandré

Renowned high-end textiles house Scalamandré has partnered with lighting, accents and home decor resource Port 68 for a licensed collection of lighting, accent upholstery and decor that debuted at the October 2013 High Point Market. The Scalamandré Maison for Port 68 line was inspired by Scalamandré’s signature fabrics and wallcovering, and design refinements include handpainted porcelain, lacquer and rich gold-leafed metal appliqué.

“We are thrilled to introduce the luxurious lifestyle of Scalamandré to the marketplace with Scalamandré Maison for Port 68,” said Michael Yip, president, Port 68. “The history of such venerated patterns as Le Zebre and Jour de Juin is captured in this timeless, fresh collection. The Baldwin Red Trunk is a grand hand painted lacquer end table/ trunk, featuring the timeless Scalamandre pattern “Baldwin Bamboo Trellis” named after famed decorator Billy Baldwin. The color of rouge red is offset with the geometric golden-brown bamboo. The carved bamboo shaped base of the trunk is antiqued in gold leaf. The Baldwin pattern is hand painted on all sides. Top features a bamboo border. Interior lined in black velvet with an antiqued brass closure hinge.

One of Scalamandre’s most famous patterns, “Jour de Juin” has humor and whimsy with the surprise of butterflies, dragonflies, bees, bugs and beetles. The trellis vine embraces the casual formality with the subtle pastel color tones, accented with celadon greens. Vase holds water.

Inspired by Scalamandre’s ikat pattern “Greystone”, our lamps are hand painted lacquer on a ceramic lamp base. This narrow 3″ depth scaled body is accented with gloss crackled ceramic side panels. Greystone pattern is hand painted on front and back of the lamp. Lucite base. Crystal ball finial.

Dramatic and chic. The square pendant is made from Scalamandre’s iconic “Le Zebre” rouge red fabric. Includes frosted lucite bottom diffuser. 9 foot black cord.

Named in honor of famed decorator Billy Baldwin and inspired by one of his favorite wallpapers by Scalamandre, the Baldwin oval planter is hand painted porcelain with embellishments of solid brass trellis feet. Perfect for so many uses; we love it for entertaining on the sideboard with chilled wine. Simply load the planter with crushed ice and chill your favorite beverage. It’s also proportioned well for fresh flowers and plants, or even rolled-up towels in the bath.
